2003 Subaru Legacy 2.5L
AWD for winter fun.
More economical than shitbox.
Probably faster too.
Looks pretty clean.
Only downside, it has higher miles than shitbox does. Not that that really means anything.
I really like this. But aren't Subarus known for head gasket issues?

Dude, Our cars both have the same name, "The Shitbox". At least your Safari has made it 20 years before being near death. My car hasn't made it 7 months before being near death. That Legacy looks kinda nice, in fact if my car gets bought back from the manufacture, then I may consider a new Legacy. I hope you can talk your parents into a Subie.

Shitfari is a fantastic name. Also, the looks of that new legacy are really growing on me. I'm going to give the Korean's about 10 more years to work on their quality, and then maybe I'll consider buying from them again.
If my car gets bought back, I'll probably end up with this

Definitely a solid car. If you are to look at it, get headgaskets checked. If they went already, they've probably been replaced by this many miles.
They're great cars. The all wheel drive is literally unstoppable in the winter. I was towing cars out of the ditch with my Outback when we got all that snow last winter.
If you go the N/A route, find one with a stick. These cars are dogs but having a manual wakes it up a little bit.
